An urgent care centers email list, built from one NAICS code and one taxonomy code

Urgent care is one NAICS code and one taxonomy code, but the two registries do not count the same thing: one counts establishments, the other counts NPIs. Here is each count with its unit, the definition, and where a center can actually be reached.

An urgent care centers email list starts with two counts that disagree on purpose. County Business Patterns counted 10,042 employer establishments in NAICS 621493 in 2023, released on 29 May 2025. The NPPES file counted by Premium Data on 15 October 2026 lists 11,871 active organization NPIs and 132 active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is 261QU0200X. The first counts locations, the second counts identifiers, and neither is a list of owners you can call.

County Business Patterns 2023, Census Bureau, employer establishments only; read on 6 October 2026. NPPES monthly downloadable file, CMS; active NPIs only, primary taxonomy only; counted by Premium Data on 15 October 2026.

Why the numbers do not match. Each source counts another thing.

  • County Business Patterns counts employer establishments, not firms. A chain with 40 centers counts 40. Structures with no paid employee count zero, so a physician-owned single-site center with no payroll falls outside the 10,042.
  • NPPES counts identifiers. An active NPI means the number has not been deactivated, not that the center still takes walk-in patients. The organization count also follows the code each organization chose as primary, which may not be the one a buyer expects.
  • The individual count is small on purpose. Only 132 active individual NPIs carry 261QU0200X as their primary taxonomy, against 11,871 active organization NPIs on the same code (CMS, NPPES file counted by Premium Data, 15 October 2026). The clinicians who work in a center carry their own codes, physician or nurse practitioner, and are counted elsewhere.

Who is an urgent care center on this list, code by code

The facility is defined by one NAICS code and one taxonomy code.

CodeWhat it coversIn the count

The individual NPI counts by state come from the NPPES file of 11 October 2026, counted by Premium Data on 15 October 2026 (CMS, NPPES downloadable file); an active NPI is not proof of current practice.

The edge cases are real centers that the two codes miss, and each miss has a direction. A center owned by a hospital system files under the hospital's NUCC code, so it sits outside 261QU0200X even though a walk-in patient would never notice. A physician who owns a single-site center may have registered the site under their own individual NPI, which is why the individual count on 261QU0200X is not zero: some of those 132 individual NPIs are owners, not clinicians. And a center that closed its walk-in service keeps its active NPI and its NAICS line until the next file. If your target is walk-in care, say so before the count: the list is built from the codes and from the names you confirm, not from a keyword search. Other facility types have their own entry on the role index.

Where urgent care center contact data comes from

  • The NPPES file gives the organization name, the NPI, the taxonomy code, and the practice address and phone the organization reported. It does not give an email, the names of the owners or the medical director, or proof that the address is current.
  • County Business Patterns gives the count of employer establishments by state and size: 1,223 in CA, 1,149 in TX, 871 in FL, and 4,441 of the 10,042 with fewer than 10 employees. No names, no addresses of individual centers.
  • State licensing boards license the facility or its administrator in most states. A license record carries an address and sometimes an administrator name. It does not give an email, and the format and the license type change from state to state.
  • The centers' own websites give the hours, the phone and often a contact address for the site. They rarely name a decision maker, and a chain website often lists only the brand, not each site.
  • The chain's corporate structure sits above the sites. Many centers belong to groups that run dozens of sites: the site answers the phone, the group decides what to buy. A list that only carries site lines misses the buyer.

From the codes to the list, in five lines

  • Write the target: which states, single sites or chains, employer establishments or all centers.
  • Count it on County Business Patterns for the scale, then on NPPES for the named organizations.
  • Match each organization NPI to the site it runs, and the site to the group that owns it.
  • Find a phone that reaches the site and a work email when one exists, then check the center still takes walk-in patients.
  • Remove your current clients before delivery.

Each step, and where it breaks, is on the page that explains the full method.

Building the urgent care centers list yourself, counted in actions

Take the Census figure for employer establishments: 10,042 in NAICS 621493 in 2023. Building that list yourself means:

  • 10,042 establishment checks, one per employer establishment counted, to confirm the site exists and still operates as urgent care;
  • 10,042 ownership lookups, one per establishment, to see whether the site is independent or part of a chain;
  • 10,042 phone searches, one per establishment, with a call each time the only number found is a chainwide scheduling line;
  • one decision maker search for every establishment kept, knowing that a small site often has no administrator listed anywhere;
  • one email search for every line kept, knowing that most center websites publish a form, not an address.

A narrower target shrinks every line of that list: the 1,223 establishments in CA are 1,223 of each check. And 4,441 of the 10,042 establishments have fewer than 10 employees, which is 44 percent of the count, so a target on small sites covers 4,441 of each check.

What breaks on an urgent care centers list

The NPI is the organization, not the person who answers

The NPPES counts give 11,871 active organization NPIs and 132 active individual NPIs on 261QU0200X (CMS, counted by Premium Data, 15 October 2026). The NPPES record names the center, not the manager or the medical director. A line built only from NPPES is a company line: it reaches the front desk, which is often what a supply or services buyer wants, but never what a recruiter or a payer wants. Decide which one you are before the count.

The chain answers for the site

The phone an organization reports on its NPPES record is whatever line it chose to publish, and for a chain site that line is rarely the site. It is the central scheduling number or the group's main line, staffed in one place for every site in the state. Calling it reaches someone who can book a patient and cannot buy anything. The fix is to treat the reported phone as a starting point: call it, ask for the site itself, and keep the number that rings at the site, not the one that rings for the brand. Where no site line exists, the line stays a company line and the group gets its own line.

One brand, many sites, one decision

The chain structure is visible in the Census count itself: County Business Patterns counts employer establishments, so a group that runs many centers appears once per site, not once as a firm. A list that carries one line per establishment therefore repeats the same buyer as many times as the group has sites, and each of those lines reaches the same switchboard. If your offer is decided at the group, deduplicate on the parent before you call; if it is decided site by site, keep the site lines and add one group line for the contract that covers them all. The 176 establishments with 100 employees or more (County Business Patterns 2023) are where the multi-site groups concentrate.

The generic clinic code hides urgent care

A center that files under another NUCC code is invisible to a search on 261QU0200X. Filter on the code, then verify the walk-in model site by site.

What Premium Data delivers for an urgent care centers target

  • A company line for each business (name, address, main phone, website), or a person line for each urgent care center (name, title, company, a phone that reaches them, work email when it exists).
  • Built on the day you order, on the codes and states you chose.
  • Three checks on every line: the company, the person, and whether the person is still there.
  • Only lines delivered with a phone number are billed, never above the ceiling you set.
  • A wrong line is refunded at its price on proof (a call recording, a hard bounce, a public profile) within thirty days of delivery.
  • The count is free, in a 30 minute call, you call one urgent care center of the file with us before paying, and the first 100 contacts are on the house.

The federal rules for calling and emailing medical facilities are summed up on our United States page.
