A surgeons email list depends first on which surgeons. The registry's surgery group covers general surgeons and their subspecialties, not orthopedic, neurological or urologic surgeons. The AAMC counted 26,837 active general surgeons in 2024. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 25,140 employed in its residual category, surgeons, all other, in May 2025.
The surgical workforce in numbers
| Count | What is counted | Source | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50,180 | individual providers whose primary taxonomy is in the NUCC surgery group, codes starting with 2086 (active NPIs). Orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, urology and plastic surgery (2082) are separate groups and are not in this number | CMS, NPPES file | September 2026 file |
| 25,140 | employed surgeons not listed in another occupation (29-1249) | BLS, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics | May 2025 estimates |
| 26,837 | active physicians in general surgery | AAMC, U.S. Physician Workforce Data Dashboard | 2024 data |
| 4,604 | active physicians in vascular surgery | AAMC, same dashboard | 2024 data |
| 3,510 | active physicians in surgical critical care | AAMC, same dashboard | 2024 data |

What separates these figures.
- The BLS category is wider and thinner at once. Surgeons, all other takes every surgeon not listed elsewhere, so it holds neurosurgeons, urologists and plastic surgeons that the NPPES row leaves out. Orthopedic surgeons and pediatric surgeons have their own occupations. And the survey excludes the self-employed and partners in unincorporated firms.
- The AAMC counts trained physicians. Its methods exclude anyone who has not completed graduate medical education. A surgical resident is out of the AAMC figures, while a resident who holds an NPI can be in NPPES.
- Units and dates. Jobs in May 2025, physicians in 2024, identifiers in September 2026.
What the surgery group holds, and what it does not
The registry uses the taxonomy of the National Uniform Claim Committee, version 26.1, in effect since 1 July 2026. The surgery group has ten codes.
| NUCC code | Specialization |
|---|---|
| 208600000X | Surgery, with no specialization: the general surgeon |
| 2086S0129X | Vascular Surgery |
| 2086X0206X | Surgical Oncology |
| 2086S0127X | Trauma Surgery |
| 2086S0102X | Surgical Critical Care |
| 2086S0120X | Pediatric Surgery |
| 2086S0105X | Surgery of the Hand |
| 2086S0122X | Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery |
| 2086H0002X | Hospice and Palliative Medicine |
| 2086P0122X | Physician Nutrition Specialist |
Outside the group, each in its own classification: orthopedic surgery (207X), neurological surgery (207T), urology (2088), plastic surgery (2082), thoracic surgery (208G), colon and rectal surgery (208C), transplant surgery (204F), otolaryngology (207Y), ophthalmology (207W) and oral and maxillofacial surgery (204E). For scale, the AAMC counted 19,419 active orthopedic surgeons, 10,910 urologists, 7,719 plastic surgeons, 6,391 neurological surgeons and 4,772 thoracic surgeons in 2024, none of them in the NPPES row above.
Also outside: surgical technologists, surgical assistants and the physician assistants of a surgical practice. Physician lists for other specialties are grouped on the role index.
Where surgeons work, and what each source tells you
- The NPPES file gives the name, the codes, and one practice address and phone reported by the surgeon. It does not list the hospitals and surgical centers where the surgeon operates.
- The CMS clinician file of Medicare-enrolled clinicians lists one line per clinician, enrollment, group and address, and CMS publishes a separate facility affiliation file that links clinicians to hospitals. Together they show more of a surgeon's places of work than NPPES does. No email, and nothing on surgeons outside Medicare.
- MedPAC's March 2026 report counted 6,436 Medicare-certified ambulatory surgical centers in 2024. About 68% of those billing Medicare specialized in one clinical area, gastroenterology and ophthalmology most often. The same chapter cites research finding that most physicians who operate in outpatient settings do so in both surgical centers and hospital outpatient departments.
- The BLS profile places surgeons of its category by employer: 13,130 in offices of physicians, 8,760 in general medical and surgical hospitals, 1,760 in colleges and universities, 720 in outpatient care centers.
- The AAMC's 2025 key findings give density: six direct patient care general surgeons per 100,000 people nationally, 12 in the District of Columbia and 11 in Wyoming, against five each in Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Nevada.
- The American College of Surgeons reports about 95,000 members worldwide. A membership roster spans countries and specialties: it is not a count of US general surgeons.
Five steps from the code group to the surgeon
- Pick the codes: the general surgery code alone, the whole 2086 group, or other surgical groups too.
- Count them in NPPES on the primary taxonomy, active NPIs only.
- Tie each surgeon to the practice that books their clinic and to the facilities where they operate.
- Find a phone that reaches them or their scheduler and a work email when one exists; check they still operate there.
- Remove your current clients.
What each step involves, and its trap, is on the full method page.
34,951 surgeons, and the calls behind them
The three AAMC groups inside the surgery code group add up to 34,951 active physicians in 2024 (26,837 general, 4,604 vascular, 3,510 surgical critical care). Reaching them yourself means:
- 34,951 NPI lookups, to confirm the primary code and drop residents;
- 34,951 practice matches, since the NPPES address is one address among several;
- 6,436 calls if you work from the surgical centers instead, one per Medicare-certified center, to learn which surgeons operate there;
- 34,951 phone searches, most ending at a scheduler rather than at the surgeon;
- 34,951 checks that the surgeon still operates at the facility on the line.
What breaks on a surgeons list
Plastic surgery in two places
The registry has a plastic surgery classification (2082) outside the surgery group, and a plastic and reconstructive surgery code (2086S0122X) inside it. Two surgeons with the same practice can land on different sides of the count. Ask for both codes, or for neither, but not by accident.
The surgeon is in the operating room
On operating days the phone of the practice is usually answered by a scheduler or a nurse. A line can be right and still not reach the surgeon on the first call. The useful number is the surgical coordinator's or the clinic's, and the call that works is often a callback.
Several facilities, one surgeon
A general surgeon can hold privileges at two hospitals and operate in a surgical center, each with its own switchboard and its own way of listing staff. The CMS file prints the surgeon once per group and address. Deduplicate on the NPI, then choose the address that serves your offer.
The person who approves the purchase
For instruments, implants and supplies, the surgeon often recommends and someone else approves: the director of perioperative services, a hospital value analysis committee, or the administrator of the surgical center. None of them has an NPI. If you sell to them, ask for them by role.
Premium Data on a surgical target
- Two kinds of line: a company line for the practice, hospital department or surgical center (name, address, main phone, website), or a person line for the surgeon (name, title, practice, a phone that reaches them, work email when it exists).
- The file is built on the day you order, on the surgical codes you named.
- Each line passes three checks: the organization, the surgeon, and whether the surgeon is still there.
- We bill only the lines delivered with a phone number, within the ceiling you set.
- A wrong line is refunded at the price paid, once you show a call recording, a hard bounce or a public profile, within thirty days of delivery.
- No charge for the count: we make it with you in a 30 minute call, and you call one surgeon of the file with us before you pay.
How federal law treats calls and emails to businesses is set out on our United States page.
In short, surgeons in three dated sentences
- On 3 October 2026, the NPPES file of September 2026 listed 50,180 active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is in the NUCC surgery group, codes starting with 2086, which excludes orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, urology and the plastic surgery classification (CMS, counted by Premium Data).
- In 2024 there were 6,436 Medicare-certified ambulatory surgical centers in the United States (MedPAC, March 2026 report to Congress, read on 3 October 2026).
- The AAMC counted 26,837 active general surgeons in 2024, or six direct patient care general surgeons per 100,000 people nationally (AAMC, read on 3 October 2026).
