A physical therapists email list, built from the eight PT codes

Physical therapy is eight taxonomy codes, and the word physical also sits in the codes of assistants and aides who are not therapists. Here is what each source counts, and where a therapist can actually be reached.

A physical therapists email list starts with eight taxonomy codes, not with the words physical therapy. In its May 2025 estimates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 267,330 wage and salary jobs in occupation 29-1123, Physical Therapists. The NPPES file of September 2026 lists 270,642 active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is one of the eight PT codes, and 31,182 active organization NPIs on the same codes.

Why the numbers do not match. They count different things at different dates.

  • The BLS counts jobs, not people. Its survey leaves out the self-employed and owners and partners in unincorporated firms. A therapist who owns an independent clinic can fall outside the 267,330.
  • NPPES counts identifiers. An active NPI means the number has not been deactivated, not that the therapist still treats patients. The count follows the code each provider chose as primary, which may not be the one a buyer expects.
  • The Census counts establishments, not therapists and not firms. An establishment is one location: a firm with 40 offices counts 40. A clinic with no employees counts zero. The 52,058 establishments of NAICS 621340 also hold occupational therapists and audiologists, not only physical therapists.

Who is a physical therapist on this list, code by code

NPPES uses the provider taxonomy of the National Uniform Claim Committee. CMS asks each provider to mark one code as primary when they select several. The count of 270,642 rests on eight codes, and the list is built on those eight codes, not on a keyword.

The edge cases are people, not codes. A therapist who kept an old address on the file, or who treats patients in a hospital under a facility record, is harder to place. Records on codes outside the eight are outside the count; if you need them, say so before the count. Other roles have their own entry on the role index.

Where physical therapist contact data comes from

  • The NPPES file gives the name, the NPI, the taxonomy codes, and the practice address and phone the therapist reported. It does not give an email, and it does not prove the address is where the therapist works today.
  • The BLS profile counts wage and salary jobs by employer type, 267,330 in May 2025, and leaves out the self-employed and owners of unincorporated firms. No names.
  • County Business Patterns counts employer establishments in NAICS 621340: 52,058 in 2023, of which 40,690 had fewer than 10 employees and 405 had 100 or more. It gives no names and no contacts, and it counts locations, not people.
  • State licensing boards hold the license record, and most publish a verification tool. Each state has its own board, its own format and its own update rhythm. None gives an email you may use.

From NPPES to a physical therapist, in five lines

  • Write the target: which of the eight codes, which states, clinics or therapists.
  • Count it on NPPES, primary taxonomy, active NPIs.
  • Match each therapist to the clinic where they treat patients.
  • Find a phone that reaches them and a work email when one exists, then check they are still there.
  • Remove your current clients before delivery.

Each step, and where it breaks, is on the page that explains the full method.

Building the physical therapists list yourself, counted in actions

Take the NPPES count for the eight codes: 270,642 active individual NPIs in the September 2026 file. Building that list yourself means:

  • 270,642 NPI lookups, one per active individual NPI counted, to confirm the name and the primary code;
  • 270,642 address reviews, one per active individual NPI counted, on the practice location reported on the file;
  • 270,642 phone searches, one per active individual NPI counted, on the numbers reported or published for each record;
  • 270,642 presence checks, one per active individual NPI counted, before a line goes out;
  • one email search for every line kept, knowing that many therapists have no work address you can find.

A narrower target shrinks every line of that list. The unit is the same everywhere: active individual NPIs on the eight codes in the September 2026 file. California alone holds 23,223 of them, New York 22,211, Texas 15,692, Florida 14,799 and Pennsylvania 13,040.

What breaks on a physical therapists list

The word physical is not a filter

The taxonomy holds other codes that carry the word physical, and a keyword search on physical therapy pulls them in alongside the eight codes of the count. Nothing in the word physical tells you which code a record carries. A therapist list filters on the eight PT codes, code by code, not on the word.

A clinic answers with one front desk

Most clinics are small: of the 52,058 establishments in NAICS 621340 in 2023, 40,690 had fewer than 10 employees. The phone on the NPPES record is then the front desk, which reaches the practice, not the therapist. A line that only carries that number is a company line, not a person line.

One therapist, several clinics

A therapist can treat patients in a private clinic, cover a skilled nursing facility and work part time in a hospital outpatient unit. The file lists that therapist once per practice address, so the same person can appear on several lines with several phones. Deduplicate on the NPI before you count.

The buyer is not always the therapist

For equipment, billing software and continuing education, the decision often sits with the clinic owner or a practice manager. Of the 52,058 establishments in NAICS 621340 in 2023, 40,690 have fewer than 10 employees, so the owner is often the therapist, but in larger clinics it is not. If your target is the owner or the manager, ask for them by title: they are found through the clinic, not through the therapist code.

What Premium Data delivers for a physical therapy target

  • A person line for each physical therapist (name, title, company, a phone that reaches them, work email when it exists), or a company line for each business (name, address, main phone, website).
  • Built on the day you order, on the codes and states you chose.
  • Three checks on every line: the company, the person, and whether the person is still there.
  • Only lines delivered with a phone number are billed, never above the ceiling you set.
  • A wrong line is refunded at its price on proof (a call recording, a hard bounce, a public profile) within thirty days of delivery.
  • The count is free, in a 30 minute call, you call one physical therapist of the file with us before paying, and the first 100 contacts are on the house.

The federal rules for calling and emailing clinics are summed up on our United States page.
