A pharmacists email list has to say where the pharmacist works. Pharmacists held about 325,200 jobs in 2025: 37% in pharmacies and drug retailers, 32% in hospitals (BLS). The chain store, the independent pharmacy and the hospital pharmacy are three different ways in, with three different buyers.
How many pharmacists, and how many pharmacies
| Count | What is counted | Source | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 327,937 | individual providers whose primary taxonomy is pharmacist (NUCC codes starting with 1835), active NPIs | NPPES downloadable file, CMS | September 2026 file |
| 325,200 | jobs held by pharmacists | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook | 2025 |
| 41,792 | establishments classified as pharmacies and drug stores (NAICS 446110), with paid employees | Census Bureau, County Business Patterns | 2023 |
| 18,960 | independent community pharmacy locations | NCPA Digest | July 2025 |
NPPES downloadable file, September 2026, CMS; active NPIs only, primary taxonomy only; counted by Premium Data on 3 October 2026.
The first two rows count people in two different ways. NPPES counts pharmacists who applied for an identifier and kept it active. CMS only requires an NPI from providers who send standard electronic health transactions, so a pharmacist who never bills under their own name may never have applied, and one who left the profession may never have deactivated. BLS counts jobs, wherever the pharmacist works. The last two rows count places, not people: the Census Bureau counts sites classified as pharmacies, and the NCPA counts independent locations, which it puts at nearly 36% of US retail pharmacies.
The pharmacist, the technician and the pharmacy
The NUCC taxonomy, version 26.1, lists 18 pharmacist codes under 1835. One of them, general practice, has been inactive since 2006; the others include ambulatory care, oncology, pharmacotherapy, psychiatric and critical care. A pharmacist who declared a specialty is counted under it, inside the same prefix.
- In: licensed pharmacists, whatever their setting: staff pharmacist, pharmacist in charge, pharmacy manager, clinical pharmacist, director of pharmacy.
- Out: pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students, who do not hold a pharmacist license.
- Out, and often mixed in by mistake: the pharmacy itself. A pharmacy holds its own organization NPI, under the code 333600000X, which the NUCC files with suppliers, not with pharmacists. A pharmacy is a company line.
- Edge case, pharmacists away from the counter: pharmacists who work for manufacturers, insurers or benefit managers hold the same license and rarely appear at a pharmacy address.
- Edge case, the pharmacy inside a store: 6% of pharmacist jobs are in general merchandise retailers (BLS). Their phone line belongs to a store, not to a pharmacy listing.
Where pharmacist data sits
| Source | What it gives | What it does not give |
|---|---|---|
| NPPES (CMS) | pharmacists with an NPI, their taxonomy and practice address, and separately each pharmacy as an organization | the pharmacists who never applied, and which pharmacy a given pharmacist works in today |
| State boards of pharmacy | the pharmacist license, the pharmacy permit, and in some states the pharmacist in charge named on that permit | an email or a direct line |
| NCPA | the number of independent pharmacies, and how the sector is moving | a list you can call |
| BLS and the Census Bureau | jobs by setting, establishments by area | any name |
| The pharmacy counter | who is on duty, who the pharmacist in charge is | a buyer, in a chain |
The model act published by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy states that each pharmacy and/or outsourcing facility shall have a pharmacist-in-charge (NABP). Each state writes its own rule from there, but the pharmacist in charge is usually the one named person a pharmacy record gives you.
Independent pharmacies also differ by what they do beyond dispensing, and that is often what a seller cares about. In the NCPA 2025 Digest survey, 80% of respondents offered medication therapy management, 73% blood pressure monitoring, 55% services for long-term care patients and 45% compounding. A target such as independent pharmacies that compound is narrower than every pharmacy, and the count changes with it.
How the list gets built
- Split the target first: chain, independent, hospital, or all three, each with its own line type.
- Pull the pharmacies from NPPES and the state permit records, and the pharmacists from NPPES.
- Attach each pharmacist to one pharmacy, using the pharmacist in charge where the board publishes it.
- Call the pharmacy to confirm who works there and who decides.
- Add a number that reaches that person and a work email where one exists.
The steps that apply to any target are in the full method.
The pharmacist list, counted in actions
- 41,792 pharmacy establishments (Census) means 41,792 sites to sort into chain or independent, one record at a time, before a single pharmacist is named.
- 18,960 independent pharmacies (NCPA) means 18,960 owners or managers to identify, one per location, since each independent decides for itself.
- 32% of 325,200 pharmacist jobs are in hospitals (BLS): about 104,000 jobs reached through a hospital switchboard and a pharmacy department, not through a store.
- 6% are in general merchandise retailers (BLS): about 19,500 jobs behind the phone tree of a large store.
- 325,200 jobs against 41,792 pharmacies: buying every pharmacist means up to 325,200 person checks, buying the pharmacies means 41,792 company lines. The unit you choose decides which of the two numbers you pay for in work.
What breaks in pharmacy lists
The chain counter does not choose suppliers
In a chain, the pharmacist at the counter fills prescriptions, counsels patients and supervises technicians. Software, wholesalers and services are usually chosen at head office. A file of chain pharmacists is right for awareness, education or a clinical message. For a purchase, the line you need is at headquarters, and it is one line, not a thousand.
Two identifiers for one pharmacy
The pharmacy's organization NPI and the pharmacists' individual NPIs live in the same file. Count both and a corner pharmacy with three pharmacists becomes four lines. Ask which unit the seller counted: pharmacies, or pharmacists.
Hospital pharmacists answer to a department
In a hospital, pharmacists work in a pharmacy department led by a director of pharmacy. The main number reaches the hospital operator, who usually routes by department, not by name. A clinical pharmacist in oncology or critical care is a person line inside a company line, and the hospital is the company.
The pharmacist in charge moves
Pharmacists in charge change jobs like anyone else, and the board record follows when the pharmacy reports it. A list built before the change still names the previous one, at an address where the staff no longer knows them.
What Premium Data delivers for pharmacy targets
- Two kinds of line: a company line for the pharmacy (name, address, main phone, website), or a person line for the pharmacist (name, title, pharmacy, a phone that reaches them, work email when one exists).
- The file is built on the day of your order, on the pharmacies and pharmacists you described.
- Three checks per line: the pharmacy, the pharmacist, and whether the pharmacist is still there.
- You pay for a pharmacy or pharmacist line only if it carries a phone number, and the total never goes above the ceiling you set.
- Each wrong line is refunded at its price, on proof: a call recording, a hard bounce or a public profile, within thirty days of delivery.
- The count costs nothing: a 30 minute call, during which you call one line with us before paying.
