An interior designers email list: the person or the studio

The United States counts interior designers in two units that never match: wage and salary jobs, and design establishments with employees. The self-employed, numerous in this trade, sit outside both counts. Decide which unit you buy before anyone counts.

An interior designers email list starts with one choice: the designer or the studio. The BLS counted 71,500 wage and salary jobs of interior designers in the United States for May 2025 (Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics). The Census counted 16,797 interior design establishments with paid employees in 2023 (County Business Patterns, NAICS 541410). One is a list of people on a payroll. The other is a list of offices. And neither count includes the self-employed designer working alone, a large part of this trade.

These counts come from Premium Data's own reads of the two public files, each with its query and date. Why the numbers do not match. The BLS counts jobs, as employers report them, and its survey leaves out the self-employed and the owners of unincorporated firms. The Census counts places of business: a studio with five offices counts five establishments. A one-person incorporated studio can appear in both, as one job and one establishment. No official source here counts self-employed interior designers, so any list claiming to cover them all is guessing.

Who is an interior designer on this list, code by code

CodeWhat it coversKept?
SOC 27-1025Interior Designers, as the BLS defines the occupationIn, for person lines
NAICS 541410Interior Design Services establishmentsIn, for company lines
  • In: designers whose occupation is interior design, whether they sit in a dedicated studio, an architecture firm, a furniture retailer or a building company. The BLS counts the work done, not the employer's trade.
  • Out: graphic designers, industrial designers, fashion designers, floral designers and web developers. The 71,500 wage and salary jobs counted for May 2025 cover occupation 27-1025 only (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics).
  • Out: automotive interior repair shops, which the NAICS code excludes by definition.
  • Edge cases: the interior decorator with no design training, who often carries the same title; the designer employed by a furniture store who also runs a side practice; the principal who owns the studio but no longer draws. Tell us which ones you keep.

A title does not settle the question. Design director, designer or project designer can describe an interior designer or someone from a neighbouring trade. Only the employer's line of work and the person's actual tasks say.

Where interior designer contact data comes from

  • Employer records from the wage survey: the occupation, the industry, the state and metro area, and wage levels. No name, no phone, no email: these are statistical counts.
  • Census County Business Patterns: how many establishments exist, by state, county and size. Counts again, never a single name.
  • Studio websites: the team, sometimes the principals, the main phone, a generic email. Rarely a direct line per designer.
  • Professional profiles: the person, the studio they name, the title, sometimes a portfolio. Almost never a work email, and no proof the person still works there.
  • Project and permit records, where published: the designer of record on a project, which dates the person but says nothing about today's employer.

A profile answers is this person an interior designer? It does not answer where does this person work this month? The phone number depends on the second question.

From occupation code to interior designer, in five lines

  • Write the target: designers, studios, or both, and in which states and metros.
  • Count it against the wage survey and County Business Patterns before pulling a single name.
  • Start from the 71,500 wage and salary jobs counted for occupation 27-1025 in May 2025, then name the people behind the jobs.
  • Attach each designer to a current studio or employer, then find the line that reaches them.
  • Check the employer, the person, and that the person still works there.

Each step, and where it breaks, is on the page that explains the full method.

Building the interior designers list yourself, counted in actions

Take the 71,500 wage and salary jobs counted for May 2025 and the 16,797 establishments counted for 2023, and the work looks like this:

  • 71,500 occupation checks, one per wage and salary job counted, to confirm each job is interior design and not a neighbouring design trade.
  • 71,500 person-to-employer matches, one per job counted, because a statistical record never says who holds the job.
  • 71,500 phone lookups, one per job counted, to find a line that reaches the person and not a switchboard.
  • 16,797 establishment checks, one per interior design establishment counted, to keep the company lines clean and deduplicate multi-office firms.
  • 71,500 still-there checks, one per job counted, before the file leaves.

A narrower target changes the arithmetic, not the method. If you only want studios in California, Florida and New York, the Census counts 2,853 employer establishments in California, 2,003 in Florida and 1,484 in New York (County Business Patterns 2023), and the establishment checks shrink with it.

What breaks on an interior designers list

The title is not the trade

Interior designer is a title that decorators, stylists, showroom staff and drafters take as their own. The 71,500 jobs counted for May 2025 are jobs of occupation 27-1025, not of a title (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics); a list built by scraping titles includes the neighbours. The fix is to check the employer's line of work and the person's tasks, not the string on a business card.

Almost every studio is small

Of the 16,797 interior design establishments with paid employees, 15,755 had fewer than 10 (County Business Patterns 2023, 15,755 out of 16,797, about 94%). In a studio that size, the designer you want often answers the main number. A company line and a person line for the same studio can be one phone call, and buying both buys one conversation twice.

Designers sit outside design studios

The wage survey counts interior designer jobs in every industry: architecture firms, furniture retailers, builders, hospitals, government. A list of interior design establishments only will never reach the in-house designer at a furniture chain or a hotel group. Decide whether those jobs are in your target before anyone counts.

The self-employed designer is invisible in both counts

The wage survey leaves out the self-employed and the owners of unincorporated firms, and County Business Patterns counts only establishments with paid employees. The solo designer working from a home office appears in neither. If that person is your buyer, say so: the count in the call will be built differently, and honestly.

What Premium Data delivers for an interior designers target

  • A person line for each interior designer (name, title, company, a phone that reaches them, work email when it exists), or a company line for each business (name, address, main phone, website).
  • Built on the day you order, on the codes and states you chose.
  • Three checks on every line: the company, the person, and whether the person is still there.
  • Only lines delivered with a phone number are billed, never above the ceiling you set.
  • A wrong line is refunded at its price on proof (a call recording, a hard bounce, a public profile) within thirty days of delivery.
  • The count is free, in a 30 minute call, you call one interior designer of the file with us before paying, and the first 100 contacts are on the house.

Other professions are grouped on the role index. Before a first call or email to a design studio, the federal rules for business outreach are summed up on our United States page.
