A dentists email list starts with the eight dentist codes of the provider taxonomy, not with the word dental. On 7 October 2026, the NPPES file of 13 September 2026 counted 238,935 active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is one of those eight codes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 124,390 wage and salary jobs for Dentists, General and 5,230 for Dentists, All Other Specialists in its May 2025 estimates, and County Business Patterns counted 135,665 dental establishments in 2023. Three counts, three units.

Why the numbers do not match. They count different things at different dates.
- NPPES counts identifiers. An active NPI means the number has not been deactivated, not that the dentist still practices. The count also follows the code each provider chose as primary.
- The BLS counts jobs, not dentists. Its survey leaves out the self-employed and owners and partners in unincorporated firms. A dentist who owns a solo practice can fall outside the 129,620 wage and salary jobs, which is the sum of 124,390 general dentist jobs and 5,230 specialist jobs.
- County Business Patterns counts establishments, not dentists and not firms. An establishment is a location: a dental group with 40 offices counts 40. It also leaves out locations without employees.
- The dates differ. NPPES is read in September 2026, the BLS estimates are May 2025, the establishments are 2023.
Who is a dentist on this list, code by code
NPPES uses the provider taxonomy of the National Uniform Claim Committee. CMS asks each provider to mark one code as primary when they select several. The count keeps the eight codes of the dentist family below, and it filters active individual NPIs on the code each provider filed as primary; an active NPI is not proof that the dentist still practices.
| NUCC code | Specialization | In the count |
|---|---|---|
| 122300000X | Dentist | yes |
| 1223G0001X | Dentist, General Practice | yes |
| 1223E0200X | Dentist, Endodontics | yes |
| 1223P0106X | Dentist, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Dentistry | yes |
| 1223X0008X | Dentist, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Dentistry | yes |
| 1223S0112X | Dentist, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | yes |
| 1223D0001X | Dentist, Dental Public Health | yes |
| 1223D0004X | Dentist, Dental Anesthesiology | yes |
The edge cases are people, not codes. A dentist who kept a non-dentist code as primary is outside the count. The hygienists, assistants and office managers of a practice are outside too. If you need them, say so before the count. Other roles have their own entry on the role index.
Where dentist contact data comes from
- The NPPES file gives the name, the NPI, the taxonomy codes, and the practice address and phone the dentist reported. It does not give an email, and it does not prove the address is current.
- The BLS profiles give the counts by occupation and employer type: 124,390 wage and salary jobs for general dentists, 5,230 for specialists, in May 2025. No names.
- County Business Patterns 2023 gives the establishments: 135,665 in NAICS 621210, of which 99,218 have fewer than 10 employees, so 73.1% are locations under ten employees, computed from those two counts. It also gives the states: California 22,757 establishments, Texas 11,902, Florida 9,039. No names.
- The NPPES state counts from the same file give the individual providers: 34,993 NPIs with a practice location in California, 17,995 in Texas, 15,077 in New York, 14,534 in Florida, 10,421 in Illinois, counted by Premium Data on 7 October 2026. No emails.
From the eight taxonomy codes to a dentist, in five lines
- Write the target: which of the eight codes, which states, practicing or not.
- Count it on NPPES, primary taxonomy, active NPIs.
- Match each dentist to the practice where they see patients.
- Find a phone that reaches them and a work email when one exists, then check they are still there.
- Remove your current clients before delivery.
Each step, and where it breaks, is on the page that explains the full method.
Building the dentists list yourself, counted in actions
Take the NPPES count: 238,935 active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is one of the eight dentist codes, counted on 7 October 2026. Building that list yourself means:
- 238,935 checks, one per active individual NPI counted, to confirm the name and the primary code;
- 238,935 checks of the practice address reported in the file, one per active individual NPI counted;
- 238,935 phone searches, one per active individual NPI counted;
- 238,935 checks that the line is still current, one per active individual NPI counted;
- one email search for every line kept, knowing that many solo dentists have no work address you can find.
A narrower target shrinks every line of that list: the five states counted above, California, Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois, each carry their own count of active individual NPIs, and each step is repeated once per NPI of the states you keep.
What breaks on a dentists list
The word dental is in codes that are not dentists
The eight codes above are not the only dental codes in the taxonomy. A keyword search on dental pulls in active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is any other dental code. A dentist list filters on the eight codes as primary taxonomy and leaves out every active individual NPI whose primary code is outside them.
A practice answers with one number
Group practices and dental service organizations often route every call through a front desk or a central line. The phone on the NPPES record then reaches appointments, not the dentist. A line that only carries that number reaches the practice, which is a company line, not a person line.
One dentist, several addresses
A dentist can work part time in a private practice, cover at a second office and treat patients in a hospital or a clinic. The NPPES file carries the address the dentist reported, which may be any one of them, and the same person can appear under two locations. Deduplicate on the NPI before you count.
The buyer is not always the dentist
For equipment, supplies and services, the decision often sits with an office manager or a regional manager of a dental service organization. These are not dentists and have no NPI. If they are your target, ask for them by title: they are found through the practice, not through the provider file.
What Premium Data delivers for a dentists target
- A person line for each dentist (name, title, company, a phone that reaches them, work email when it exists), or a company line for each business (name, address, main phone, website).
- Built on the day you order, on the codes and states you chose.
- Three checks on every line: the company, the person, and whether the person is still there.
- Only lines delivered with a phone number are billed, never above the ceiling you set.
- A wrong line is refunded at its price on proof (a call recording, a hard bounce, a public profile) within thirty days of delivery.
- The count is free, in a 30 minute call, you call one dentist of the file with us before paying, and the first 100 contacts are on the house.
The federal rules for calling and emailing practices are summed up on our United States page.
