A cardiologists email list, built from the four adult cardiology codes

Cardiology is not one code. It is four, all filed under internal medicine, and the word cardio also appears in the codes of technologists, pharmacists and nurses. Here is the count, the definition, and where a cardiologist can actually be reached.

A cardiologists email list starts with four specialty codes, not with the word cardiology. In its May 2025 estimates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 17,290 cardiologists on payrolls, 10,630 of them in offices of physicians. The AAMC counted 23,011 active physicians in cardiovascular disease in 2024, plus two subspecialties reported apart.

Why the numbers do not match. They count different things at different dates.

  • The BLS counts jobs, not physicians. Its technical notes say the survey leaves out the self-employed and owners and partners in unincorporated firms. A partner in an independent cardiology group can fall outside the 17,290.
  • The AAMC counts people who have finished training. Its methods page excludes residents, fellows, retired and semiretired physicians, and uses the primary specialty each physician selects on the American Medical Association's census. Its three adult cardiology groups add up to 32,148.
  • NPPES counts identifiers. An active NPI means the number has not been deactivated, not that the cardiologist still sees patients. The count also follows the code each provider chose as primary, which may not be the one a buyer expects.

Who is a cardiologist on this list, code by code

NPPES uses the provider taxonomy of the National Uniform Claim Committee, version 26.1, in effect since 1 July 2026. CMS asks each provider to mark one code as primary when they select several. The four codes of the count all sit under internal medicine.

207UN0901XNuclear Cardiologyno, it is filed under nuclear medicine
208G00000XThoracic Surgery (Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery)no, these are surgeons

The edge cases are people, not codes. A cardiologist who kept the plain internal medicine code, 207R00000X, as primary is outside the count. The nurse practitioners and physician assistants of a heart practice are outside too. If you need them, say so before the count. Other physician specialties have their own entry on the role index.

Where cardiology contact data comes from

  • The NPPES file gives the name, the NPI, the taxonomy codes, and the practice address and phone the cardiologist reported. It does not give an email, the hospitals where the cardiologist holds privileges, or proof that the address is current.
  • The BLS profile gives the count by employer type: 10,630 in offices of physicians, 4,760 in general medical and surgical hospitals, 880 in colleges and universities, 480 in outpatient care centers. New York (2,260) and Texas (2,050) come first among states. No names.
  • The AAMC dashboard gives the professional activity: in 2024, 77.1% of cardiovascular disease physicians were in office-based practice and 12.3% were hospital-based full time. It describes the work setting, not who owns the practice. No names.
  • The CMS clinician file of Medicare-enrolled clinicians, in its release of 10 September 2026, is built with one line per clinician, enrollment, group and address, with the group name and a phone. A separate CMS file links clinicians to the hospitals they are affiliated with. Neither covers a cardiologist who does not bill Medicare, and neither gives an email.
  • MedPAC's March 2026 report on ambulatory surgical centers found that the specialties growing fastest in those centers from 2023 to 2024 were pain management and cardiology. Some cardiology procedures now happen in a facility with its own manager, outside the hospital.

From code to cardiologist, in five lines

  • Write the target: which of the four codes, which states, practicing or not.
  • Count it on NPPES, primary taxonomy, active NPIs.
  • Match each cardiologist to the practice or hospital where they see patients.
  • Find a phone that reaches them and a work email when one exists, then check they are still there.
  • Remove your current clients before delivery.

Each step, and where it breaks, is on the page that explains the full method.

32,148 cardiologists, counted in actions

Take the AAMC figure for the three adult groups it reports: 23,011 plus 5,984 plus 3,153, so 32,148 active physicians in 2024. Building that list yourself means:

  • 32,148 NPI lookups, to confirm the name and the primary code;
  • 32,148 address checks, to see whether the practice location in the file is where the cardiologist works today;
  • 32,148 phone searches, with a call each time the only number found is a group switchboard;
  • 32,148 checks that the cardiologist has not left the group;
  • one email search for every line kept, knowing that some cardiologists have no work address you can find.

A narrower target shrinks every line of that list: electrophysiologists alone are 3,153 of each.

What breaks on a cardiology list

The word cardio is in codes that are not physicians

The taxonomy holds cardiovascular technologists (246X00000X), cardiology technicians (246W00000X), cardiology pharmacists (1835C0206X) and cardiac rehabilitation nurses (163WC3500X). A keyword search on cardio pulls all of them in. A cardiology physician list filters on the four physician codes, then on the MD or DO credential.

A heart group answers with one number

Large cardiology groups and hospital heart programs often route every call through central scheduling. The phone on the NPPES record then reaches patients' appointments, not the cardiologist. A line that only carries that number reaches the practice, which is a company line, not a person line.

One cardiologist, three addresses

A cardiologist can see patients in the group's office, read studies at a hospital and work in a cath lab or a surgical center. The CMS file lists that cardiologist once per group and address, so the same person can appear on three lines with three phones. Deduplicate on the NPI before you count.

The buyer is not always the cardiologist

For equipment, devices and services, the decision often sits with a practice administrator, a cath lab manager or the director of a hospital's cardiovascular service line. These are not physicians and have no NPI. If they are your target, ask for them by title: they are found through the practice or the hospital, not through NPPES.

What Premium Data delivers for a cardiology target

  • A company line for each practice or heart program (name, address, main phone, website), or a person line for each cardiologist (name, title, practice, a phone that reaches them, work email when it exists).
  • Built on the day you order, on the codes and states you chose.
  • Three checks on every line: the practice, the cardiologist, and whether the cardiologist is still there.
  • Only lines delivered with a phone number are billed, never above the ceiling you set.
  • A wrong line is refunded at its price on proof (a call recording, a hard bounce, a public profile) within thirty days of delivery.
  • The count is free, in a 30 minute call, and you call one cardiologist of the file with us before paying.

The federal rules for calling and emailing practices are summed up on our United States page.

In short: cardiology in three dated facts

  • On 3 October 2026, the NPPES file of September 2026 listed 39,118 active individual NPIs whose primary taxonomy is one of the four adult cardiology codes (CMS, counted by Premium Data).
  • In its May 2025 estimates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 17,290 employed cardiologists in the United States, 10,630 of them in offices of physicians (BLS OEWS, read on 3 October 2026).
  • The AAMC counted 23,011 active cardiovascular disease physicians in 2024, 77.1% of them in office-based practice (AAMC U.S. Physician Workforce Data Dashboard, read on 3 October 2026).
